Microbial Energy Device to Produce Renewable Energy
The Metropolitan Water District in conjunction with the L.A. Sanitation District is developing a water purification reuse process for wastewater. GELF is proposing using MED-assisted AD to provide renewable generated energy to power the water purification process. On completion, the Pure Water project will provide enough water for 1.5 million people in one of the largest wastewater reuse purification projects in the world. By adding the MED, it will also be one of the largest renewable energy powered water purification facilities in the world, powered from waste.

Demonstration Plant - JWPCP
The Pure Energy Proposal was submitted to L.A. Sanitation by GELF Sciences on July 21st, 2023. The MED uses advanced microbial electrolysis applied in an exterior retrofit solution to increase biogas generation up to 5-fold from existing anaerobic digesters. It can easily be integrated into existing anaerobic digesters currently operating at the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant (JWPCP).
